First GCRTA Rail Car Arrives

A brand-new Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) railcar has arrived in Cleveland. It is the first of 54 new railcars that will replace GCRTA’s current fleet, which dates back to the 1980s and earlier.
The new railcars are being paid for through several funding sources. GCRTA will pay only 24% of the total replacement cost. The federal government provided more than $241 million, the Ohio Department of Transportation provided $60.5 million, and NOACA provided $28.8 million.
The new railcars will be able to run on all GCRTA rail lines in Cuyahoga County. This was not possible with the previous fleet. Over the next year, GCRTA will test the new railcars, train employees, and complete all required safety checks before the cars enter regular service. Passengers will be able to ride the new railcars on the Red Line starting in summer 2027. The Blue, Green, and Waterfront Lines are expected to receive new railcars in 2028.
The new fleet will help reduce maintenance costs and make the railcars easier to clean. They will also include updated technology and features. Overall, the new railcars will help create a more modern and reliable transportation system for people across Cuyahoga County.
